For all who love the history of Leigh-on-Sea and its people
THE UTTONS OF LEIGH
The Uttons of Leigh (Uttons Avenue) hailed originally from Great Glemham in Suffolk. John and Ann Utton (sometimes Utting or Hutton) came to Leigh in the 1820s. After Ann died John married a local girl - Isabella Emery.
Their grandson, Lewis Alexander Utton (who did actually build Uttons Avenue), became very prominent in local affairs and owned local brickfields. He was also a Borough Councillor of some standing. This picture is taken from the Southend and Westcliff Graphic.
The Uttons lived in a house called 'Glemham' in Victoria Avenue, Southend, somewhere around where the huge office blocks are now. An Utton researcher wonders if anyone has any photographs of that part of Victoria Avenue before the office blocks were built.
